Rastafarianism is a spiritual and cultural movement rooted in reverence for nature, African identity, and conscious living. Daily life for many Rastafarians centers on livity—a holistic way of being that emphasizes peace, mindfulness, and harmony with the Earth. This includes a natural, plant-based diet (often called Ital), avoidance of artificial substances, and the use of cannabis as a sacrament for meditation and spiritual connection. Rastafarians express their beliefs through distinctive dreadlocks, vibrant colors (red, gold, green, and black), reggae music, and a deep commitment to social justice and repatriation to Africa, seen as the spiritual homeland. Their lifestyle reflects a continuous resistance to “Babylon”—systems of oppression—and a devotion to truth, self-awareness, and divine oneness with Jah (God).
